What is Weyfarers?

Weyfarers is the recreational arm of Weybridge Rowing Club. We are one of just a handful of recreational and touring rowing clubs in the UK, formed for and by people who think rowing should be FUN!

  • No time to train 8 days a week?
  • Love rowing, but want to have a life as well?
  • Never tried rowing, but want to have a go?

Then maybe YOU should try recreational rowing!!

Don't get us wrong - we don't just paddle around. We aim to improve our technique and get fit, just like our more competitive friends. But our horizons are wider.....

Never rowed before? No problem! We run learn to row courses in the Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Weekend Plans

Since the Thames is on red boards, we will (subject to the lock-keeper's permission) row on the Wey Navigation today (Saturday). The beginners course will also take place on the Wey.

There will be no rowing on Sunday. However, the Capsize Drill is still on - 3 p.m. at Cranmore School

 
 

Hide Awey Gets a Facelift!

Since we couldn't get out on the river this weekend, we put the time to good use giving the Weyfarers Hut a make-over. We've painted some of the walls, laid new flooring in the living room and bathroom, thrown out a lot of junk and given everything a thorough clean. A big thank-you to everyone who helped to make it happen, especially Dawn who bought the lino. Glenn who laid it, and Lara who donated the new fridge and generally organised things. We still need various bits and pieces - have a look at the list on the notice board in the Hut and see if you can contribute.

 
 

Heart Monitoring

CRY: Cardiac Risk in the Young, a charity promting awareness of heart comditions in the young, are offering free ECG screening for 14-35 year olds at Cleves school in Weybridge on Sunday July 15th. It takes about 10 minutes for the test and apperntly about 1 in 300 people have undetected heart problems. They get booked up pretty quickly, so don't delay!

 
 

Capsize Drill

A reminder that we are organising a capsize drill at Cranmore School at 3 p.m. on Sunday 13th May. Email Caroline if you would like to take part.

 
 

Easy Fundraising

Weyfarers has joined Easyfundraising. You can raise money for the Club by using Easysearch instead of Google, and Easyfundraising for your online shopping. 2012 British Rowing Tour

The tour takes place on the Thames from Henley to Teddington from Thursday 20th - Sunday 23rd September, details here . The tour is now full, but we are maintaining a wating list and will try to fit people in if we can.

 
 

Brussels Weekend

We had just left Weybridge when we heard that the Brussels Handicap d'Hiver had been cancelled, due to the course being frozen over! Undaunted we crossed the channel and made our way to the Royal Sport Nautique club, who were surprised and, we think, impressed to see us. There was enough of the canal without ice for us to have a row on both Saturday and Sunday, and as the only club to participate in the (non) race, they awarded us the trophy! We also enjoyed a bit of sightseeing, some good Belgian food and quite a lot of beer... Here are some photos

 
 

British Rowing Tourers Dinner

The BR Touring Rowers dinner on Saturday 24th March at Leander Club was a great success. We had 78 attendees, from 27 different clubs. Special guest Guin Batten made an inspiring speech about her experiences of rowing in the Sydney Olympics, crossing the Channel in a single scull, and rowing in the Maldives - could be a venue for a future Weyfarers tour!

 
 

Rowing Courses

The dates of the 2012 "Wey to Row" courses have just been published. Details here. The April course is now full, and bookings are being taken for the July tour.

Have you rowed at some time in the past but had a break? Then our Refresher Course is for you! The next one will be on Tuesday evenings starting on 17th April - contact us for details.

Are you a competent rower? Then prove it by taking our Competency Test!

We will also run sculling courses in the spring and summer, leading to our Watermanship Award

Christmas Party

We had a great time at the Christmas Party at the Old Crown on Wednesday 14th December. Nearly 50 members, from old-timers to the latest beginners, came along and enjoyed the company, the good food, and the excellent quiz,. Many thanks to Lara and Chris for organising another splendid social event, and to Gideon, our quizmaster extraordinaire!

 
 

Caroline is British Rowing's Coach of the Year!

Caroline has been recognised by British Rowing for her contribution towards developing the club, through our acclaimed Learn to Row courses and Coach Assistant courses. Thanks to those who nomiated her. More details here

 
 

FISA Tours 2012

There will be two FISA tours in 2012- Belgium in May and Canada in August/September.

Applications must be in by the end of January, but demand is likely to be high, so don't delay! Note that you must be a British Rowing member to take part, and the form needs to be sent to British Rowing to be stamped before you send it off.

Tuesday 18.30 - 20.00 Circuit training at Heathside School (from 22nd November)

Wednesday 10.00 - 12.00 (all levels, including beginners, with Greg and Alasdair)
Wednesday 19.30 - 20.30 land training with Caroline and Katy, followed by supper
Friday 14.00 - 16.00 (experienced rowers only)
Saturday 08.00 - 10.00 (in racing boats)
Saturday 11.00 - 13.00 (all welcome)
Sunday 10.00 - 12.00 (all welcome)

 
 

Sunday Lunch Time Socials

Weybrige and Weyfarers join together for a Sunday lunch time social on the first Sunday of every month in the Weybridge RC bar. The next Sunday social will be on 4th March. Come and have a few drinks with your friends and enjoy the free nibbles.
